Operational fit: how we match brands and vet logistics partners
The right logistics partner isn’t the one with the lowest rate. It’s the one whose operation was built for a business like yours. Here’s how we work that out.
The rate card is the easy part
Put three 3PL quotes side by side and they’ll often look remarkably similar. Pick and pack, storage per pallet, a receiving fee. The differences that decide whether the relationship works sit underneath: how they handle your products, how their systems talk to your channels, what happens to your orders on the busiest day of the year, and whether you’re the kind of client they’re set up to serve well.
That’s operational fit. It’s the reason FulfilQ exists.
What operational fit actually means
Operational fit is how closely a provider’s day-to-day operation matches what your business needs now and where it’s heading. Capability and fit aren’t the same thing. Plenty of providers can technically do batch tracking, FBA prep or EU delivery. Far fewer do it every day, for brands like yours, at your volume.
What we score
Your products. Size, weight, fragility, value, shelf life and any special handling. Bulky homewares, batch-tracked supplements and high-value fashion need very different operations.
Your order profile. Monthly volume, units per order, SKU count, seasonality and how sharply you peak.
Your channels and integrations. Shopify, Amazon, marketplaces, wholesale and retail accounts, and whether the provider connects to them natively or through workarounds.
Where your customers are. Delivery regions, the carriers that serve them well and the delivery promise you’ve made at checkout.
The services you need. Returns, kitting, B2B fulfilment, customs clearance, freight and cross-border shipping.
Where you’re heading. New markets, new channels, rapid growth. A provider that fits today but can’t follow you to the US or into retail is a short-term fix.
The provider’s sweet spot. Their minimums, their typical client and the work they’re best at. Being a valued mid-sized account usually beats being the smallest client in a big operation.
Why we set the bar at 80%
When you submit an RFP, your brief is scored against every provider in our network. You only hear from those scoring 80% or more. Below that line, you’d spend your time on calls explaining why their operation doesn’t quite suit yours. If nobody reaches 80%, we tell you and the reasons why, rather than sending you weak matches to fill an inbox.
Listed providers and vetted partners
FulfilQ lists logistics providers across the UK, USA, Europe and Australia so brands can see the full market. A listing tells you what a provider says it does.
A FulfilQ Vetted Partner has been through our vetting process, so what you read on their profile has been checked by us. That’s why vetted partners appear first in Logan’s recommendations. Within each group, the order is decided by fit alone.
How we vet partners
Every vetted partner is interviewed by our team. We want to understand how they really operate: their sites, their systems, the brands they serve best and the work they turn away. They then complete a detailed operational questionnaire that goes well beyond a directory profile, covering capabilities, integrations, minimums, specialisms and service levels. We use it to check their profile and to teach Logan the operational detail that drives accurate matching.
What vetting doesn’t replace
Vetting narrows the field to providers worth your time. It doesn’t replace your own due diligence. Visit the warehouse, speak to current clients and read the contract properly.
Can a provider pay for a better fit score?
No. Providers can pay to list, upgrade or sponsor FulfilQ, and that’s how we keep the service free for brands. None of it changes a fit score. If we let money move the score, the score would stop meaning anything, and so would FulfilQ.
Questions about operational fit
- Is operational fit more important than price?
- Price always matters, but it’s the second question. A cheap rate with the wrong operation usually costs more through errors, delays, returns and rework.
- How is the fit score calculated?
- We compare your requirements against each provider’s operation across 11 core operational fit criteria.
- What does FulfilQ Vetted Partner mean?
- The provider has been interviewed by our team and their operational detail has been checked.
- Can I see providers that aren’t vetted?
- Yes. Logan scores every vetted provider in the network, and you can browse them all or submit an RFP to get matched.
