Common questions
- How is import VAT calculated in the UK?
- Import VAT is charged at the UK standard rate of 20% on the customs value of the goods plus the customs duty. The customs value is the goods plus the shipping and insurance to the UK, which is how this calculator works it out.
- Do I pay customs duty on goods under £135?
- No customs duty is charged when the goods in the shipment are worth £135 or less. VAT is charged by the seller at the point of sale instead, and this calculator shows it at 20% of the goods value.
- Is import duty charged on shipping costs?
- Yes. Duty is charged on the customs value, which includes the shipping and insurance to the UK as well as the goods. That is why the calculator asks for your shipping cost.
- How do I find the duty rate for my product?
- The duty rate depends on the commodity code for your goods. You can look up the code and its rate in the UK Trade Tariff on GOV.UK, then choose the matching rate in the calculator.
- What is a customs clearance fee?
- It is the fee a carrier or customs broker charges to clear a shipment through UK customs for you. The calculator adds it as a range for shipments over £135; at £135 or less it is left out.
